It’s all too common for schoolkids who don’t look the same as the other kids to find themselves as a target for others who bully them or make fun of their appearance. For a child who may have unique features that are immediately noticeable – like a cleft lip and eyes that have different colors – that makes them even more of a target.
Madden Humphreys, age 7, was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. In addition to having a scar from repair surgeries, he has heterochromia iridium, which means his eyes are two different colors. As you can imagine, many of his peers used those differences as opportunities to ridicule him – and also not hard to understand how sad that experience has been for him.
Madden’s life changed forever, however, after he adopted Moon – a cat with a cleft lip and two different colored eyes.
